Eat This Blog: First Grilling of the Season – BBQ Ribs

As it was finally 60 degrees here in Michigan for the first time this year we took the opportunity this afternoon to set up everything on the back deck, including my grill. After getting up fairly late and having a late pancake breakfast we’d picked up these ribs for this evening’s dinner. I made up a quick rub of dark brown sugar, Kosher salt, pepper and granulated garlic. After drying the ribs and rubbing them with the mix I baked them at 275 degrees F for about three hours. I then lit the grill, slathered these things with Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce and grilled them over low heat for about an hour. While I did cut them before serving the meat fell right off the bone anyway. Oh yeah, the grilling season has begun! Tomorrow evening is supposed to be the same kind of weather, and there’s chicken waiting in the wings.

  1. You call 60 degrees grilling weather? Ugh! 🙂
I guess I’m a spoiled Southern California sunshine brat! It would have to hit over 75 degrees for me to be inspired. For me, 60 degrees means soup, soup and more soup!
Todd would agree with you though, he grew up in cold country and would be right there grilling with you even at 35 degrees! If his meat isn’t frozen, he’ll grill it!

  2. Yeah Diane, that’s grillin’ weather around here. Just two weeks ago we has 10″ of heavy, wet snow! Heck upper Michigan just got a good dose of snow last week. Care for some swimming? 😉

  3. Roll on summer! I remember last year when I was in Helsinki and it was near to -5, I managed to convince at a few of my work colleagues to fire up the grill! We had some reindeer and I must say it was superb.

  4. Chris, I think I might grill some salmon on cedar planks this evening, it’s almost 70 degrees F here! As for reindeer I have three or four cookbooks (one’s from Amsterdam) with some great-sounding reindeer recipes. If only I could get the stuff with paying bookoo bucks for overnight shipping!

  5. The reindeer was expensive, I was working as a nurse over there and one of my friends father was an actual reindeer farmer, got us a bit of a discount (not much mind)!

  6. @Chris, most of the recipes I have call for reindeer medallions, currently $29/pound here. I guess I’m not making that anytime soon!
